A Day in Tainan

A Tour of the City (5/16/2013)

MOR's friend took a day off from his work to take us on a tour to Tainan. We have been to Taiwan many times but have never really visited the city of Tainan. We thought that it would be a good idea to see some of the sights that we did not have to travel a long distance for.

The village of YiChu, Chiayi. The best past time for us was walking around the wet market in the morning and visit the 7-11 stores in the evening. Not much going on here otherwise.

This seemingly quiet street can be awfully noisy in the middle of the night with cars and trucks speeding by.

First, lunch at this milk fish restaurant in HsinYing. They are famous for their milk fish and rice with braised pork.

After a short drive to the city of Tainan we arrived at the Chihkan Tower.
Here the sculpture in the garden depicting the negotiation between General Cheng Cheng-Kung and the Dutch, who were ruling the island at that time.

Apparently, Chihkan Tower is an important historic site of Taiwan.

Looking down from the tower to the garden and main entrance.

Many Japanese visitors at this site.

It was not crowded and actually pretty nice. But looking at some pictures, it seems to be more beautiful at night.

Our next stop was the Yanpinjun Wangci or Koxinga Temple.

Another important shrine dedicated to Cheng Cheng-Kung.

We did not go inside the temple.

The park outside was very nice.

Anping Fort (Fort Zeelandia) was our next stop.

Here is another statue of Cheng Cheng-Kung. He played an important role in the history of Taiwan because he was the one who drove the Dutch away from this island.

The Fort Zeelandia Museum

Staircase inside the tower of the fort.

Paintings on the wall along the staircase.

Our last stop for the day was the Eternal Golden Castle. It was really quiet here as it was late in the day, an hour before closing.

Paddle boats for rent

Enjoyed a great taro ice cream before going into the castle.

Another fort type of landmark

this one has a more military look and design to it

We accomplished quite a bit in just one afternoon. Not sure if these places would have been interesting to other tourists if they have to make a special trip here to the city. But since we were already in the area not too far away it was worth the trip and checked them off our lists.
