Chicken or Turkey?

A Short Trip to Hong Kong and Taiwan April 2018
April 19, 2018 Thursday

This was the last full day that we had in the village and a relaxing day for MOR to enjoy some more of the local food that he had been craving for months. One item that he really likes is the milk fish soup. They do sell milk fish in the Chinese stores in California but they are the frozen ones which are not as tasty as the fresh ones sold in Taiwan. I am not good at handling bony fish but I still enjoy a good bowl of milk fish soup whenever we have a chance. Of course, it would be the stomach part of the fish only since that is the part that is most tasty and with fewer bones.

Yong Tung Milk Fish
Again, we went back to the same place where we were the other day, but found out that the newer location is closed on Thursdays. Fortunately, their original store is just across the street which worked out just fine for us. This restaurant is highly rated by locals for cheap and fresh milk fish.

Newer location closed on Thursdays.

Original store just across the street.

Smaller and older.

At the corner of Chenggong Road and Minquan Road in the township of Xuejia, Tainan.
(60 Minquan Road, Xuejia, Taiwan)

The originally store is kind of tight and very busy.

Milk fish soup, around NTD $80.

Delicious milk fish stomach. It's good to go with a bowl of braised pork rice (NTD $10).

Doesn't this look familiar? Yes, Costco. They have branches in several cities in Taiwan.

Pen Shui Chicken Rice
They are called 'chicken rice' but in fact it's turkey meat that they serve. Apparently, turkey rice is the main specialty in Chiayi. We always make it a point to have some whenever we are back in the village. There are some popular ones in downtown Chiayi and that was where we went that evening for snack. We have been here a couple of times before and really enjoyed their food there.

Inside Pen Shui Chicken Rice. They also called themselves "Spraying Water Chicken Food" on their signs.

Turkey rice (NTD $55)

oyster soup ($50)

boiled pork belly

My favorite, bamboo shoot salad ($150).

In search of a good bowl of turkey rice, we went to another restaurant in the township of Puzi, an award winning establishment. I can't recall the name of this place, unfortunately.

Presentation was not as good as the other one but the taste was surprisingly flavorful.

Some dishes we ordered.

Another good meal!

A small but clean eatery.

I think I need to try and make some turkey rice at home next time, possibly the day after Thanksgiving, with all the leftover turkey meat.
