Good Eats in Southern Taiwan (II)

2019 Summer Trip to Asia
August 11~15, 2019 -- Southern Taiwan

Just sharing a few more photos of food we had in southern Taiwan before we started our journey up north to Taipei.

Little Leg Lamb Shop, LiuYing, Tainan
Apparently, lamb or mutton is a specialty in certain parts of southern Taiwan. As for the township of LiuYing, since this is a dairy farming community, cows and sheep are also their famous cuisine. Kind of like Ponta Delgada in Portugal. On this day, we brought FIL out to lunch at this restaurant that specializes in lamb cuisine.

Mutton soup and thin noodle with lamb oil. I particularly enjoyed the noodle for its flavorful taste.

Stir-fried mutton with bitter melon. OK.

A whole plate of boiled mutton, not bad, especially the chewy skin.

Small shop with good service.

Lee Beef Soup, Hsinying, Tainan
This is a tiny restaurant that specializes in beef soup of Tainan located in the city of Hsinying. Whenever we are back in Southern Taiwan, we always find the opportunities to go there to satisfy our craving. We have tried other places but still like this one the best. Their included all-you-can-eat minced pork rice is most flavorful. Just having that bowl of rice with their steamy hot beef soup will make me happy any time.

Photos of their weekly specials on the wall.

Flavorful minced pork rice.

Help yourself to the condiments and minced pork rice.

I was bored, so just snapping a picture of the stores across the street on a rainy day.

This is yet another mutton restaurant which I have no idea where it was.

As you can see the noodle with lamb oil was not as attractive as the other one was.

Not much business other than us.

Wet market in Yenshui, which they called "Cow Market".

Delicious fresh fruits that we can't find in Los Angeles.

Budai Fish Market, Budai, Chiayi
Another market we visit every time we are back in Taiwan is the Budai Fish Market, basically for their oyster omelettes. This is the place that serves the best oyster omelettes in my opinion. This is just a stall inside the Fish Market, so it's a cramped small place.

Oyster omelette with oyster soup.

Oyster soup with ginger.

At another stall they had these fried oyster buns which we tried for the very first time. Very good!

This was where we got the oyster bun.

Smart Fish, Chiayi
Finally, what do you think we had before leaving for Taipei? Of course, Smart Fish pot!

Their minced pork rice was just OK.

But the fish head pot was delicious just the same.

Good turkey rice again.

Very busy front kitchen.

Take-away line.

  1. Hi, Rebecca

The first Minced Pork Rice is my kind of comfort food! Good, dry-ish plain rice as a foil for for a semi-saucy topping. Minced pork is excellent! Taiwanese food is quite different from Cantonese which is our go-to here. Fried oyster buns! New to me, but they look great.

rainy here today, won't mind staying home. Have a good day!

  2. That's what we are having for dinner tonight, minced pork rice! I am sure it's not as good as those in Taiwan but one pot can last us a couple of days. Running out of ideas of what to cook these days without the opportunities of eating out. We have having summer weather these next few days in Southern California. Take care!
