Fredericksburg, Texas, A Taste of Germany

34-Day Cross Country RV Trip + 7-Day Caribbean Cruise 2022
Day 5: Mesilla, Fort Stockton to Lake Hills, Texas
May 1, 2022

After hiding out inside the RV through the stormy night, we felt fortunate that we survived the ordeal in one piece. It was definitely scary and nerve-wrecking, which of course kept us up quite a bit through the night.

We woke up to a bright and sunny morning, calm and beautiful with no sign of lingering stormy weather.  Now, we have time to explore the campground a little before leaving this hill top RV park.

Hill Top RV Park, Fort Stockton, Texas

A decent swimming pool right next to the office overlooking I-10.

Across the highway, on the other side of I-10 up on the hill, we could see the statues of Fort Stockton which pictures were on many billboards as we drove into town.

We had a long drive today, almost 300 miles between Fort Stockton and our destination for the night in Lake Hills area. I really wanted to check out Fredericksburg, the German town, in between. Not sure if we should go there on this day or if we should visit the next day when we have a shorter drive. If we go today, which means we will have to detour and get off I-10 onto Hwy 290, then get back on I-10 afterward. If we go tomorrow, we will have to back track a little but will have more time to explore. We'll see how it goes.

There was definitely a change of scenes as we drive up to the hill country of central Texas.
A lot less traffic also.

Colorful wild flowers along the highway.

Fredericksburg, Texas
We decided to go to Fredericksburg as we were driving along so we won't have to back track the next day, which makes sense. That means we will not have a lot of time visiting this town but at least we can get an idea of how it is like.

After missing a turn out and took an extra hour getting into town, we found parking on the street near the courthouse in town. It was already close to 2:00 PM by now and we still wanted to get some German lunch. Son found this restaurant online with good reviews so we just headed there as soon as we parked.

The Old German Bakery. We barely made it there before they stop serving lunch.

Street view from inside the restaurant.

Quite a few customers there even at that hour but they turned away those who came after us.

My weiner schnitzel. Good!

Son's Rouladen.

MOR's Sausage Plate.
Everything was good even though we really wanted some roasted pork hocks.

After lunch, we just walked a little along the main street area. It looked like it was going to rain.

The very pretty library.

They will be celebrating 175th anniversary in a few days.

The County Court House

Main cross roads in town.

I really wanted to visit the National Museum of the Pacific War in town but we ran out of time. We needed to make our way to the campground for the night. Well, maybe next time if we happen to be in this area again. That is what traveling is about, you just can't see everything you want on one trip!

After filling up our gas tank, we were on our way to Lake Hills for the night. At least gas prices were still decent.
