Ketchikan, Alaska

NCL Jewel 21-Day Transpacific Cruise Tokyo to Seattle
May 24, 2018 (Thursday) -- Ketchikan, Alaska
Time in Port: 8:00 AM ~ 4:00 PM

Ketchikan is a popular port in Alaska that all the cruise ships make their stops here one way or the other as they sail up and down this route. There seemed to be nothing much that we want to do other than walking around the port area in town. I would have loved to visit Totem Bight again, but with  five ships in town that day, I would be very nervous if we couldn't catch a bus back before boarding time.

Ship sailing into port early in the morning.

I could spot something near the bank.

Oh, yes, a deer was out for its morning walk.

Past by Ketchikan International Airport.

We were the only ship that was anchored off the shore instead of docking at the pier.

That was where our tenders dropped us off ...

...at the Casey Harbor City Float Ramp in front of Sockeye Sam's. The Princess ship was docked even farther away but still walking distance to town.

From the pier, we just walked leisurely up to Creek Street. Here is the Chief Johnson Totem Pole before crossing the bridge.

Totem Pole

The creek.

Unlike the time we visited in September, there was no salmon swimming upstream this time.

We were planning to take the funicular up to Cape Fox Lodge.

But, it was not in operation that day. The sign said there were shuttle buses taking people up to the Lodge from the Museum but some in our group went there and waited. Did not see any.

We hiked up instead. There was a stairs off Married Man's Trail that leads up to Cape Fox but someone walking in front of us turned around and claimed that there's nothing up there. I thought may be they have closed off that road so we all turned around and took the longer route through Park Avenue, then Venetia Avenue up. It was a climb but we got there with a few huffs and puffs. On our way back down, we found out that the short-cut actually worked. We should have stayed on that without listening to those people.

And finally reached Cape Fox Lodge with a view of the town below.

These are some neat totem poles on the Cape Fox property.

Following the Married Man's Trail back down to the Creek Street area.

The Married Man's Trail is an amazing walk especially during Salmon run season.

The very crowded Creek Street.

Go through the stores to the back porch for better views of the creek.

Out from the south side Creek Street. By now, we have separated from our group for some free time in town. Some in our group went on the free shuttles around town and enjoyed it. Some went shopping, and some had a good seafood meal.

The steeple of St. John's Church, part of the totem pole at Whale Park, and the lamp post on Mill Street.

After checking out a few souvenir stores, we found the Alaska Fish House for some fish and chips. There was a line but we did not wait too long for our orders.

And we were able to find a table by the window.

We had the AK Sampler, $15.99 with one piece each of their halibut, salmon, and cod.
A good way to try out all three kinds of fish. They were all very good but I like the halibut best.

View of the boat dock from inside the restaurant with HAL Eurodam in the background.

The statue right outside of the Visitor's Bureau.

The Welcome sign at Front Street and Mission Street.

HAL Niew Amsterdam was also in town.

Eagle Park

Beautiful stained glass pictures by the broadwalk.

We had our share of shopping done in town. This is the best shopping stop in my opinion, if you want something like T-shirts, sweatshirts type of gifts for cheap. Just make sure you fully utilized the coupon books provided.

After watching the Princess ship left behind some passengers that day, we made sure to get back on board before the last tender.

The next time we are on land would be debarkation in Seattle. Boo-hoo!

New England Clam Chowder

Beef Carpaccio

Fava bean, corn, and duck salad. Very good!

Grilled Vermont Duck Breast

Not a very good photo, but I just had to have a picture with Alvin, the host in Tsar's, who took good care of all our dining arrangements in the main dining room. Such a nice gentleman.

This was our last towel creation on this cruise, and one that I have not seen before. A ship sailing in  waves. I was certainly glad that we didn't sail through waves like that! So cute!
